Windows 7 64 - MXS won't open

Post by Prologue »

I just got a new laptop (Alienware m11x) and I can't get MXS to open. The drivers that are installed are the newest available for this laptop (has switchable graphics) but are version 188.XX. I've tried with both the integrated Intel 4500mhd graphics and with the nVidia 335M and both behave the same way. I tried using some driver cleanup software as was recommended in another thread and it just wiped out my drivers so nothing would work (didn't recognize the cards anymore). Here is my last log:

I also tried a couple compatibility modes (XP with SP2, SP3) and it does the same thing. I have never owned a computer with windows 7 on it, so I don't know what else could be going wrong here.

Bummer, just tried all the vista modes and none of them worked. It does the same thing, tries for a few seconds and then says mx2010XXXXX.exe stopped working.

Im on 7 ultimate 32 bit but should be about the same. Most Win 7 problems seem to be drivers but I know it may sound insulting but did you uninstall MX then reinstall making sure all anti virus software is turned off? I have had a few issues like that before too.

Yep I've uninstalled and deleted the folders, then reinstalled and I have no anti virus installed right now. Unfortunately there aren't any old nor new drivers for the laptop, it was recently released.

Good idea. I'll see what they come up with. I am betting that jlv will be able to say some along the lines of "yeah, those 188 drivers had problems with XXX, I remember people doing XXX and having it work out". Haha, we'll see. I don't really feel like installing xp on this beast.

I don't really know what that means. I'll start looking this opengl stuff up though.

DONT give up on Win 7 it Will work, also check you DirectX files and make sure there ok. I have just been travelling around the world and got this HP laptop in New Zealand and it runs like a dream for its specs but laptops are fussy so Alienware are your best bet on sorting it out. Hope you get it done and dont give up. You can also do a duel boot system btw. DOH lol.

So, I looked up the opengl stuff a little bit. It looks like it is supposed to be already included in the windows install. On the opengl wiki it says:

"If you are running a 64 bit version of Windows, you might be wondering if there is a OpenGL64.dll file. The answer is no, there isn't. On all versions of Windows, Windows\System32 contains all the 64 bit DLLs. It contains the OpenGL32.dll which is actually a 64 bit dll. "

I do have a 64 bit windows (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) and I checked the folder specified in the wiki and I have the opengl32.dll file (dated7/13/2009). I don't know what else to check for though.

Out of interest do you have an original XP OS install disk to make an XP boot drive? Then you can make sure your MX install is ok. Just a thought

Hmm, yes I do. I even have a free 4gb usb flash drive (or external hdd) with its name on it. I've done this crap before using some random back door methods and nlite, is there a new better method available?

I mean, partition your hardrive so you can boot to XP or 7. So you install XP on the laptop to see if, it is ok, is MX ok and is it just Win 7 problem.
