I'm not a huge fan of large drum sets. 4 piece with the bare essentials is the way to go.

Best guitarist ( Steve Vai ) mixed with best Bass player ( Billy Sheehan ) with one amazing drummer Virgil Danati. Guess my question to you drummers would be at what point do each different drum piece sound different after 4 piece? I can't tell the difference being I am not a drummer.

On another note not sure if DJD is still around but he can rip on the guitar!

I, personally have no use for anything past a four piece in the style of music I play. I usually play a 12" Rack, and a 16" floor. However, my next kit, which will be from SJC, will be a 24x22" Bass drum. 13x9" rack, and 16x14, and a 18x16" floor toms. I also play with large cymbals. I use a 22" light ride, which I crash on, but it has a beautiful sustain and darkness to it when ridden, and has a very clear cutting bell, and I use a 20" A custom crash, which cuts through even the brightest tone. I'm also a fan of dark hi hats. Maybe a china here and there. I have an 18" Zildjian Oriental, which has a beautiful clear cutting trashiness to it. I believe that bigger is better, especially in the music that's on my resume.

And I believe that for the solo'ing artist, or an artist that knows how to fully utilize different notes that toms/other percussion instruments produce. Some people can make a 6"-20" toms sound perfectly in sync with each other, but unfortunately, not very many drummers will EVER need that many toms.
Drummers like Neil Peart, and Terry Bozzio are specialists at truly making a drum kit sing.
Large kits are fun to play on and experiment, but the drummers that aren't utilizing them, or are bringing their entire 8+ piece drum kit to a small show are usually very inexperienced drummers, and all of those toms are usually way out of tune.

I don't believe there's any reason to have a huge kit, but that's my personally opinion. I'm also the same guy that swears by DW 9000 series hardware, and will use nothing else. I'm very picky when it comes to gear and how my drums sound.

I subscribe to the "less is more" mentality for the most part. Sometimes the little nuances are lost if you try to over complicate things, playing super fast or doing fancy tapping shit is great, but its a bit overwhelming sometimes.

Been working on this for awhile, on my new Dean acoustic electric. One of my favorite sound tracks of all time. Its so simple, but really moving.

Can you guys tell me if the sound is messed up? It plays perfect on my head phones, but it sounds a bit funky on my tv speakers.



I hope to start recording more stuff, got a bunch of blues riffs I want to put together but it takes me forever to get things the way I want them.

Music is an awesome outlet though, good for the brain.

Really enjoyed that! I am so ready to get an acoustic electric! But just a suggestion, i feel like in the beginning you should try to put some fast licks in to give some false climax's, it helps bring out that feeling you're trying to get across! But don't take it personal, it sounds great! If you dont understand what i mean pm me!

Maybe turn down the reverb? I don't know, something sounds strange with it but I can't pinpoint it.

As for that soundtrack, I've been sitting behind a keyboard for upwards of four hours a day trying to make something with that kind of emotional impact, and I can't do it for the life of me. I can make happy emotional songs, but I can't get that kind of bittersweet sound that Gustavo gets, especially in the "All Gone" and "Vanishing Grace" songs. I'll post a video of my recent ideas sometime this week; I have about eight that I'm playing around with at the moment.
