Handguards help protect your hands from those bigass rocks that come flying just about all the time..It hurts as shit, lol.
They help keep mud off from your hands and shit, even if you crash/drop the bike whatever..And I think some handguards even look cool

oh.. i know the question was not directed to me but i think its a 450 look at the little tab that comes off the frame and how the rear fender connects to the "sponsor" plate

Have you ever been battling with somebody for the inside, they push and push and you just mis-judge slightly and clip your little finger on the post. No? Just me? Oh well, it hurts like hell.
I personally hate handguards but I can see their advantages--especially the wraparound ones (Also protect levers etc?).
Plus I really couldn't be bothered unbolting my handguards between mx and enduro(especially since the grips become ruined with wraparounds) just to look cool at events.
I hate the concept of "gooners" (probably because I am one ) if a guy wants to go out wearing a boiler suit, a helmet without a peak, hold his elbows down and his feet off the pegs-let him do it. It's just better when he smokes all the "cool" guys.
Back to handguards (sort of on topic but not really) our forefathers of MX actually made their own handguards out of sheets of plastic. Hell they looked ridiculous, but they did the job they were made for and the idea was taken up by companies.

I think Jamie Whitham said something along the lines of: "It shouldn't matter how you look, all that matters is your faster than everyone else."

Ugh, sorry I got on my soapbox a bit there. Rant over...continue.
